Here’s an e-mail from BEFORE I renewed my insurance, which makes it pretty plain what sort of contents need covering.

Hi Malcolm,
I’m not living aboard at the moment – staying at home and visiting the boat for maintenance. Can do without single handed too, if I did go out this year it would be for fun with a partner at least. I think in the current market the value of the boat might be £25,000 to £30,000, I have quite a lot of belongings on there, perhaps £5,000 if you include hand held GPS and radio and chart cassettes, camera, computer, clothing et al.
I could also restrict it just to the marina for the time being although I’d be interested to know if the cruising range could be reduced to something like Thames and south coast or something like that maybe and/or a bit of E coast but just weekends or short holidays. Please let me know the options I might go marina only if that’s a big saving and trips can be added later if needed.
Many thanks

I have just had a claim rejected by Northern Reef, on the grounds of mechanical failure and long term wear. This was despite two mechanical opinions during pre test running of engine and shaft assembly that all was fine. A shipwright ‘s opinion that an impact to the shaft, aft of the stuffing box caused the damage, and testimony of two structural engineers to say that mechanical failure was impossible and that the damage was recent and as the result of an impact as claimed. These fellows are poison, stay away in droves. Spread the word!
